ADA -- After upsetting highly-ranked John Carroll last week, the Heidelberg University men's soccer team has struggled to maintain top form. The plight was evident on Wednesday as the Student Princes suffered their first loss of the season, a 4-0 setback to Ohio Northern University.
Having moved all the way up to No. 8 in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll, Heidelberg dropped to 9-1-1 on the season, 2-1-1 in OAC play. Unranked ONU improved to 9-4-1, 2-2.
Heidelberg got off to fast start, gaining the game's first few scoring opportunities. ONU, however, settled in and began to control possession. J.J. Fortner put the hosts on top in the 29th minute, darting between defenders on the left side before beating HU goalkeeper Jake Kress.
In the 41st, Fortner doubled up the Polar Bear lead with his second of the game.
After halftime, ONU would score twice more.
Kress made eight saves in the loss. ONU's Dylan Plank tallied four saves.
The Student Princes will return home to face another formidable opponent on Saturday. First-place Otterbein (10-2, 4-0) visits Tiffin for a 2 p.m. start at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex.
