The Heidelberg University track & field teams will have a male and female representative at next weekend's NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships. Freshman Wes Fritz has qualified in the high jump and senior Madison Haasz has qualified in the shot put and hammer throw.
Fritz (Norwalk/St. Paul) is one of two freshmen in the field of 20 that will square off at nationals, hosted by Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. His personal record, 2.06m, came this week at the All-Great Lakes Elite Meet. Fritz, making his first trip to nationals, is seeded 13th.
"Wes missed out on a trip to nationals by only a few centimeters during the indoor season -- and he wasn't going to let that happen again," said head coach Joe Yoder. "Wes loves competition and the pressure that comes with it ... He has paved the way for our men's team this year as a freshman leading with an unmatched work ethic."
The men's high jump is the first field event on the docket for Friday, May 27. The event is slated to begin at 12:30 ET.
Haasz, no stranger to the national spotlight, is making her second trip to outdoor nationals. She will compete in two events -- the shot and hammer. In the hammer, she is seeded third, with a mark of 56.92m. That mark came at the All-Great Lakes Elite Meet -- and shattered her previous best by more than two meters. Haasz (Massilon/Jackson) enters the shot seeded 10th, with a PR of 13.92m.
"Madison has been the face of our women's program the last few years and has set a great example of what hard work, dedication and determination will get you," said Yoder. "I'm very excited for her to qualify in both events. We are working on sending her out in a big way."
Haasz earned All-American status in the hammer in 2015 -- a throw of 53.9m put her in sixth place.
Women's shot put is scheduled for a 1:00pm ET start on Friday. The hammer throw will begin at 12:30 ET on Saturday.
