BOSTON, Mass. -- The 2019 indoor track and field season came to a close for three Heidelberg University competitors on Friday evening at the National Championships hosted at the University of Massachusetts - Boston.
"It wasn't the day we were hoping for, but I couldn't be more proud of our three guys [Wes Fritz, Ben Gutzky, and Dan Stoll]," said head coach Joe Yoder. "The amount of work they put in this season in less-than-ideal situations is unbelievable."
Fritz, a senior, narrowly missed out on All-American honors with a ninth place finish. His best jump was six feet, eight inches (2.03m). Fritz tied on height with three others, but missed out after hitting the 6-08 mark on his second attempt. The winning jump was by David Lembke of Carroll (7-00.5)
Gutzky, also a senior, finished 12th in a field of 20 competitors. His best toss came on his third effort and was measured at 61 feet, 3.5 inches (18.68m). The winning mark was 68 feet, 7.25 inches by Eric Holst of St. Thomas.
Finally, junior Dan Stoll unfortunately did not finish in the 400m dash prelims. Stoll had been limited by an injury heading into the race, sustained at the OAC Championships.
"These guys are hungry and I think you'll see them at the outdoor championships," said Yoder. "All three had big personal best seasons all the way around."
With three competitors participating on the national stage, this marked the first time since 2008 that a trio of athletes had competed for Heidelberg at the final meet of the indoor season.
Fritz, Gutzky, and Stoll will now focus their attention on the outdoor track and field season beginning on Tuesday, March 12 at the Shamrock Invitational hosted by Coastal Carolina University.
