MARIETTA, Ohio – The Heidelberg University softball team earned another split in Ohio Athletic conference doubleheader action as they rallied in game two against the Marietta Pioneers. After the Pioneers took down The Berg, 6-2, the Student Princes rallied with a 6-1 triumph in the game two.
Sophomores Kayla Zachrich and Marissa Smego led the Berg offensively by driving in a combined four runs and collecting one double each against the Pioneers. Freshman Kyleah Brey added to the Berg's offensive pressure with two RBI's of her own, both of which came in game two.
In game one, the Berg ladies took a one-run lead in the top of the first on a Zachrich single to right field that scored senior, and career steals record holder, Jami Wagner.
Freshman Randi Kelsey added to the Berg advantage in the Berg half of the third when she rapped an RBI single to right. Kelsey's single plated fellow freshman Jordan Hux to push the Student Princes ahead, 2-0.
Sophomore righty Paige Atterholt, who received her eleventh start of the season, kept the Pioneers scoreless until the bottom of the fourth.
Marietta dropped four runs on the right hander to put the Berg behind, 4-2 heading into the later innings.
Atterholt threw 4.2 innings giving up nine hits. Atterholt's day would come to an end after surrendering a two RBI double in the fifth. Freshman Erin Chapman came on in relief and blanked the Pioneers for 1.1 innings.
Trailing 6-2 in the seventh a would-be rally would be halted by the Pioneers as Marietta's starter, Alexis O'Hair, only allowed a single before retiring the Berg in game one.
Just as she did in the first contest, Zachrich opened scoring for the Berg ladies in game two. The Defiance native knocked a double down the left field line that scored sophomore Lisa Simmons. Smego entered the box on the ensuing at bat and drove in Brey and Zachrich.
While Chapman kept the Pioneer bats hushed, Hux tapped an RBI double to centerfield that plated the speedy Wagner in the fourth.
Brey claimed her only two RBI's of the day in the top of the sixth with the Student Princes leading 4-0. Simmons and Wagner crossed the plate as Brey knocked a two out double to centerfield to push the Heidelberg ladies ahead, 6-0.
Chapman and the Berg defense gave up their only run of the game when a two out single to Wagner in centerfield scored Marietta's leadoff hitter Brittany Curry.
The Student Princes closed out the Pioneers in the bottom of the seventh to earn the doubleheader split and their fifth OAC victory of the year. Sixth year head coach Betsy Hada's ladies improve to 16-10 overall with five doubleheaders left in 2014.
The Student Princes will travel to University Heights, Ohio to battle John Carroll on Tuesday, April 15. First pitch between the Blue Streaks and The Berg is slated for 3 p.m.
