TIFFIN – The Frann's Field Magic, on display in the regular season, made an appearance in the postseason – lifting the No. 1 seeded Heidelberg University softball team to a walk-off win in the 2015 Ohio Athletic Conference tournament. Mikaela Mitsch singled home Taylor Hicks, lifting the Student Princes past the No. 4 seed John Carroll University, 3-2.
Abbey McKee gave the Student Princes a 2-0 lead with a two-out two-run double in the bottom of the fourth. The hit drove in Kayla Zachrich and Renee Lovett. The double, McKee's 15th of the year, set a new program single-season record.
After four scoreless innings, JCU finally touched up Heidelberg starter Paige Atterholt in the fifth. Lauren Cianciolo doubled home Taylor Tercek, cutting the HU lead to 2-1.
In the sixth, the Blue Streaks tied up the game on a sacrifice fly by Christie Wade, scoring Alyssa Coleman.
Having stranded the go-ahead run at third in the bottom of the sixth, the Berg offense got back to work after Atterholt retired the side in order in the top of the seventh.
Hicks led off with a basehit up the middle, then moved to second on a bunt single by Lovett. Marissa Smego drew a walk to load the bases for Mitsch. The junior delivered the walk-off hit – capping Heidelberg's third against John Carroll this season, and sixth overall.
The Student Princes pounded out 12 hits, led by a three-hit effort by Lovett.
Atterholt struck out three and gave up eight hits, improving to 13-2 on the season. With 13 wins, she ties her total from last year and sits one behind Lexie Pinkelman's program record set in 2011.
Heidelberg moved to Game 3 of the OAC Tournament, where they will face No. 2 seed Capital. John Carroll fell to the consolation bracket, where they will face No. 3 seed Ohio Northern.
