AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – Following another solid week by the Heidelberg University softball team, Paige Atterholt and Marissa Smego were recognized with the pitcher and hitter of the week awards by the Ohio Athletic Conference.
Atterholt turned in a historic performance in the circle on Sunday, firing a perfect game against Capital. The junior faced the minimum in the Berg's 14-0 5-inning run-rule win in game two. She threw just 49 pitches while striking out a pair of Crusaders, including the last batter of the game. The perfect game was the second no-hitter of Atterholt's career, as she also fired one on March 10, 2014 against Juniata in Florida. For the week, she threw 16 innings, allowing six runs while posting a 3-0 record. She threw two shutouts, both 5-inning run-rule wins for the Student Princes.
Smego was unstoppable at the plate over the course of the six games in during the week, batting .737 over the stretch. Starting all six games, she racked up 14 hits in just 19 at-bats while driving in nine runs. Smego also drove five doubles during those games. Her biggest game of the week came against Mount Union on Monday in game two, where she went 4-for-4 with three doubles and 5 RBI. Through Sunday's games, Smego is in a tie for second place in the OAC with her .494 batting average, also tying for fourth place with 31 RBI on the season.
Heidelberg currently is tied for first place atop the OAC standings with a 10-2 conference mark, holding a 21-5 overall record. Their next games will be on Tuesday, April 14th, when they host John Carroll for a conference doubleheader at Frann's Field. The first of those two games is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
