- Moore wins two, stays unbeaten
- Patel drives in five, Catalano GW RBI in game one
- Heidelberg sweeps, 7-6 and 11-3
KISSIMMEE -- The off day on Wednesday did not slow down the Heidelberg University softball team, as they picked up wins against Thiel and Muhlenberg on Thursday. The Student Princes rallied back to defeat Thiel in the seventh, 7-6, before cruising to a five-inning win over the Mules, 11-3.
GAME ONE: Heidelberg 7 Thiel 6
A literal walkoff vaulted the Berg over the Tomcats in a back and forth game. Heidelberg took a 3-0 lead after two, thanks to three unearned runs. Kaitlin Keys walked and Leah Bouillon reached on an error. It was followed up by walks to Patel and Joanna Catalano, which brought home Keys. Bailey Smith hit into a fielder's choice, but two Berg runners scored on the play.
A two run home run by Thiel in the top of the third cut the Heidelberg lead to one. Both runs off starter Vanessa Macias were unearned.
Theil tacked on two more runs in the fourth, but their lead was short-lived, as the Student Princes evened the score in the bottom half of the frame. Keys ripped a single to center to lead off the inning before being lifted for pinch runner Abby Barno. Barno advanced to second on a Bouillon sac bunt. Patel lifted a ball into center, but after a few bobbles the Theil centerfielder recovered to retire Patel. Tagging on the play and being heads up, Barno scored from second for a 4-4 ball game.
The Tomcats once again capitalized on Student Prince mistakes, adding two more unearned runs to take a 6-4 lead. HU responded with a double by senior Renee Lovett. Lovett scored on a pinch hit single from freshman Kaylie Rowland -- Rowland's fourth RBI of the trip.
Desperate for a rally in the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Shelby Miller led off the inning with a single. The Tomcats got back-to-back strikeouts to Heidelberg's three and four hitters. Keys drew a walk and Bouillon was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Patel. Patel drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game at six, and Catalano followed with another walk, giving Heidelberg the literal walkoff victory.
Macias and Kaitlyn Moore teamed up for the win in the circle. Macias went four innings, giving up just two earned runs. Moore, who earned the win, allowed just one hit in three innings of work while fanning three.
GAME TWO: Heidelberg 11 Muhlenberg 3 (5 innings)
A seven run second inning was more than enough to push the Student Princes to their second win of the afternoon.
The rally started when Abbey McKee crushed a solo home run into left center field to lead off the inning. Kaitlyn Moore singled and advanced on a sac bunt by Keys. Patel sent a liner through the left side to score Moore and extend the lead to 2-0.
With runners at the corners and two out, Lovett's infield single plated Patel. She was followed by a Miller single to score Bailey Smith. The big blow of the frame came off the bat of Casey Moore, smashing a three run home run to left, the sophomore's second of the season.
A three run home run by the Mules would not faze the Berg, as HU plated four more in the third.
Patel singled up the middle once more to drive in two runs. The final two Heidelberg runs were unearned.
Heidelberg improves to 6-2 on the year.
The Berg closes out its trip to the Sunshine State tomorrow with games against PSU-New Kensington and Simmons. Game time against PSU-New Kensington is slated for 1:30 p.m.
