BLUFFTON -- Back in the Buckeye State, the Heidelberg University softball team split a sloppy twinbill with Bluffton University on Sunday afternoon. The Beavers took game one in extra innings, 7-6, before HU responded with a 13-10 win in the nightcap.
GAME ONE: Bluffton 7 Heidelberg 6 (8 innings)
Bluffton opened the scoring with an unearned run in the first. Bailey Smith led off the third with a single and Renee Lovett reached. After a sac bunt pushed the runners over 60 feet, Abbey McKee hit a single down the left field line, perfectly placed between the bag and the Bluffton third baseman. Both Lovett and Smith scored on the play to take a 2-1 lead.
The Beavers tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Heidelberg regained the lead courtesy of a Leah Bouillon sac fly, scoring Haylee Patel, who singled up the middle. Bluffton once again tied the game in the fifth to send the game to extras.
Starting pitcher Kaitlyn Moore escaped out of the seventh unscathed after a leadoff double.
With the international tie breaker in effect, Kaitlyn Moore was placed on second to begin the inning. A bunt moved her over, and later scored on a Kaitlin Keys double. Bouillon drew a walk, before the big blow came off the bat of Smith. The senior outfielder doubled to left, scoring both Keys and Bouillon for a 6-3 lead.
The Beavers clawed their way back to walk off with four straight hits -- two for extra bases.
The Student Princes had two runners thrown out at the plate in the loss. Moore (5-2) suffered the loss in the circle. She struck out eight over 7.1 innings of work.
GAME TWO: Heidelberg 13 Bluffton 10
In a wild game two where the teams combined for 10 errors, the Beavers scored one run in each of the first three innings.
Kaitlyn Moore crushed a no-doubt home run to right center in the second to put the Berg on the board.
Singles by Shelby Miller and Smith, followed by a Casey Moore walk loaded the bases for McKee. McKee grounded to third, where the third baseman elected to throw home. A good throw home looked to end the inning, but the Bluffton catcher was ruled off the plate, allowing the run to score and extend the inning. Kaitlyn Moore drew a bases loaded walk to put HU back on top.
Smith hit an infield single to score Keys in the fourth.
Heidelberg put up a six spot in the fifth. Casey Moore led off the inning with a double and McKee reached on an error. Kaitlyn Moore launched her second blast of the day -- this one to center. Following a pitching change, two hits and a failed pickoff attempt brought home another run. Bouillon doubled hom Keys and Lovett reached on an error to score Bouillon.
The Beavers answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, two unearned. Smith added another run for the Berg with a single up the middle in the sixth.
After Bluffton scored four in the sixth, Heidelberg needed insurance runs. The Student Princes scored three times in the inning to earn the win.
Freshman Vanessa Macias took the win (2-2) as Moore got the save.
Heidelberg struggled to contain Bluffton's Josie McElroy, who finished the day 8 for 9 with 6 RBIs and 2 home runs.
HU will travel to Defiance College for a double header with the Yellow Jackets. Game times on Tuesday are scheduled for 3:30 and 5:30.
