DEFIANCE -- In a makeup game from Tuesday, the Heidelberg University softball team split a pair of games with Defiance College. Heidelberg held off Defiance in the first game, 7-6, before the Jackets edged out the Student Princes 6-5 in the nightcap.
GAME ONE: Heidelberg 7 Defiance 6
Defiance struck first in the bottom of the second, plating two runs off a double. With two outs in the top of the third, Heidelberg used a rally to take a 3-2 lead. Shelby Miller worked a walk and Casey Moore reached on an infield single. Senior Abbey McKee crushed a three-run blast, her fourth of the season to cap the scoring.
Kaitlin Keys homered to lead off the fourth, extending the HU lead to two runs. The Yellow Jackets came back in the bottom of the frame, scoring three runs, two earned. Similar to the fourth, a Kaitlin led off the inning with the home run, this one off the bat of Kaitlyn Moore.
McKee led off the top of the seventh with a walk, and was lifted for pinch runner Rachel Ensman. The walk was followed up by a single from Kaitlyn Moore, and Haylee Patel was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, Ensman scored on a wild pitch, the eventual game-winning run.
Defiance stranded the tying run at second in the bottom of the inning, as Kaitlyn Moore earned her sixth win of the season.
For the second time this season, the Berg hit three home runs in a game. The previous time, a matchup with Misericordia in Florida, Mckee and Keys went yard, along with Casey Moore.
GAME TWO: Defiance 6 Heidelberg 5
It didn't take long for the Berg to get on the board in the nightcap, as Renee Lovett doubled to leadoff the game. After a sac bunt moved her over to third, the senior scored on an RBI groundout by Casey Moore.
A single by the Yellow Jackets in the second evened the score at one. Miller singled home Brooke Lewis in the third to take a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth, Lovett singled and moved to second on a sac bunt. Casey Moore reached on an error, which allowed Lovett to score. Casey's sister, Kaitlyn, singled her home for a 4-1 lead.
The lead was short-lived, as Defiance scored two in the fifth and three in the sixth. The Student Princes loaded the bases, but could not push the tying run across.
Morgan Daniels pitched 4.1 innings before being lifted for Macias, who suffered the loss.
The Student Princes kick off OAC play on Saturday as they host Ohio Northern. The twinbill against the Polar Bears is scheduled for 1 p.m.
