ALLIANCE -- The Heidelberg University softball team maintained their grip on first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference with a sweep at Mount Union. Heidelberg won 7-1 and 9-6 -- a day earlier than expected. Saturday's foul weather forecast prompted the schools to move play to a gorgeous Friday in Alliance.
Heidelberg improved to 20-8 overall, 10-2 in the OAC. Mount Union fell to 10-18, 3-9. With their 20th win, the Student Princes have eclipsed the 20-win plateau in each of the past five seasons.
GAME ONE: BERG 7-11-1 MTU 1-3-1
Heidelberg took control with runs in the first three innings. In the first, a Casey Moore single and an error allowed Shelby Miller to score from first. In the second inning, Haylee Patel doubled and scored on a single to center by Leah Bouillon.
Ahead 2-0, HU scored three times in the third. With two on and two out, Kaitlin Keys doubled to left center, plating the Moore sisters. Bouillon followed with a single to right that scored Keys.
It remained 5-0 until the top of the seventh. Patel doubled again, driving in two.
Starter Kaitlyn Moore kept the hosts off the scoreboard until a sacrifice fly in the seventh. She threw a complete game three-hitter.
GAME TWO: BERG 9-12-3 MTU 6-10-2 (Eight Innings)
Keys put the Student Princes out in front in the top of the second with a single that scored Kaitlyn Moore. With runners on the corners, Keys was thrown out trying to steal, but Haylee Patel scored on the play.
Patel's infield single in the third plated pinch runner Lauren Wolf, giving HU a 3-0 lead.
Mount Union took the lead with a run in the third and three in the fourth inning.
Undeterred, HU regained the lead with two in the sixth. Keys doubled and moved to second on a bunt single by Joanna Catalano. Bouillon followed with an RBI single to left. Later in the inning, Casey Moore drove in Catalano with a sacrifice fly.
Heidelberg, however, relinquished the lead in the bottom of the sixth with two runs.
Down to their final three outs, The Berg tied the game at six thanks to two errors. Keys drove in the run on a squeeze bunt that scored Kaitlyn Moore.
Kaitlyn Moore (10-4) got the win in the second game as well. She went four innings and fanned six.
Heidelberg is scheduled to host Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday. First pitch of the OAC doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m.
