SB: Student Princes split opening day in Florida

TITUSVILLE, Fla. -- The Heidelberg University softball team split opening day on the spring trip to Florida on Sunday afternoon.

In game one, the Berg dropped a tight contest with Randolph College (Va.) by a final score of 6-3, before defeating Penn State - Behrend (Pa.) by a tally of 7-3.

After day one, Heidelberg sits at 1-1 overall.

Day Highlights:

Casey Moore smacked two hits, tallied two RBI's, and walked twice. Shelby Miller collected two hits, and three RBI's. Freshman Kat Brady tallied five hits, 2 RBI's, and three runs to mark her Berg debut.

Freshman pitcher Stephanie Drapp earned her first collegiate win in game two.

Game One: Randolph - 6, Heidelberg - 3

A steady day at the plate was all the Wildcats (5-2) needed to secure their fifth win of the young season. After trailing by one heading to the bottom of the second inning, Randolph scored three times in the bottom half of the inning to establish control of the contest.

Heidelberg went ahead, scoring their first run of the season at the top of the second, on a squeeze bunt attempt by Leah Bouillon. Raye Hammond was caught in a run down attempting to score, but was awarded the score after a Randolph interference call.

The Wildcats then scored the next six runs of the game before Shelby Miller and Casey Moore combined for two RBI hits in the seventh inning, making things interesting late. Miller plated Hannah Ours first, before Moore's double plated Kat Brady.

Senior Morgan Daniels (0-1) started in the pitching circle for the Student Princes, lasting five innings and allowing nine hits. Daniels did strike out seven on the day. Freshman Grace Fillinger made her debut in relief and tallied one strikeout.

Game Two: Heidelberg - 7, Penn State Behrend - 3

Right at the start, the Student Princes seemed to be in control for game two, as freshman Stephanie Drapp -- working in her first collegiate game -- put together a 1-2-3 inning in the first. Run support in the bottom half of the first kickstarted what was going to be seven run outing for the Berg.

Casey Moore drove home the first run of the game with a sac fly to deep center field, allowing Kat Brady to find the plate.

Brady then drove home a run of her own in the third as part of her four-hit game. For the time being, the run was part of a brief exchange of scores with the Lions (1-1) early on.

The fourth is where Heidelberg struck hard capitalizing on two fielding errors by the Behrend defense. The Berg attack put five runs across the plate in the bottom half of the inning to all but seal the deal. Joanna Catalano, Leah Bouillon, Brady and Shelby Miller (2) all drove home runs in the inning.

The five-run outburst was enough as the Berg held off the Lions' offense to collect their first win of the season.

Drapp (1-0) finished her complete game win allowing three runs on eight hits. Drapp also struck out four Lions' hitters.

The Berg will switch venues to the originally scheduled Randy Larson Complex in Plant City, Florida tomorrow. Game one is slated for 10:00 a.m. vs. Illinois College, while game two will begin at 2:30 p.m. vs. Bluffton University.
