WILMINGTON, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University softball team wrapped up the 2019 season with a split at Wilmington College on Sunday. The Quakers won the opener 3-0 before the Student Princes stormed back to take the second game, 5-2.
Heidelberg ended the year at 14-22 overall, 6-12 in the OAC. Wilmington also finished 6-12, but moved to 18-14 overall.
Wilmington's Grace Shell stymied the Heidelberg offense in game one. Shell shut out the Student Princes and allowed two hits and two walks. The Quakers scored one in the third and two in the fourth off of Kaitlyn Moore. Despite the runs, Moore only allowed five hits and two walks. Both hurlers struck out four.
Perhaps a bit frustrated after being held scoreless in game one, Heidelberg answered the bell in the nightcap. Kat Brady and Raye Hammond hit one-out singles before Stephanie Drapp connected on a three-run homer. Kennedy Conney followed with a solo homer of her own, staking the Student Princes to a four-run lead.
Drapp and Conney were the first HU players to go back-to-back since Abbey McKee and Kaitlyn Moore did it at the OAC Tournament last year.
The hosts cut the lead in half with two runs on the third inning, but Drapp was strong in the circle. Over 6.2 innings, she allowed two runs on nine hits, and did not allow a walk.
In the bottom of the seventh, senior Morgan Daniels relieved Drapp. Daniels recorded the final out and earned her first save of the season.
As the season closes, so to do the careers of seniors Erica Leber, Becca Radabaugh, Abby Barno, Joanna Catalano and Morgan Daniels. The Class of 2019 advance to the OAC Tournamement three times and to the NCAA tournament once.
