ALBION, Mich. – A trio of Student Princes finished in double-figures as the Heidelberg University women's basketball team improved to 3-0 with a 69-62 win at Albion College on Tuesday.
The first ten minutes saw five lead changes, but Heidelberg took the lead for good when Phillips hit one of four 3-pointers.
After a late steal by Paige Ricketts, Phillips hit a 15-foot jumper near the end of the first half, giving Heidelberg a 39-27 lead. Phillips had 18 points at the break and Abrecht was perfect from the floor, scoring eight.
Hawkins scored eight of Heidelberg's first 10 points to start the second half. Heidelberg pushed out to an 18-point lead before the Britons closed the gap with a 17-5 run.
Phillips scored five points in a 40-second span with less than two minutes to play before fouling out. Phillips' run gave the Tricolor a comfortable cushion as the game turned into a free-throw contest.
"We controlled the controllables and battled through adversity," said first-year head coach Morgan Shriver. "In a loud gym three hours from home, we played with intensity as a team."
Hawkins led the Tricolor with four assists.
"Allie played the game we've been needing her to play," said Shriver.
The Student Princes outshot Albion (0-1) 43% to 24%. The Britons won the battle on the glass 56-34.
Heidelberg returns to the court next Tuesday at Oberlin. Tip-off with the Yeowomen is slated for 6 p.m.
