Women's basketball beats Bluftton, moves to 5-0

BLUFFTON – The Heidelberg University women's basketball team continues to find a way to win. The Student Princes used overtime to defeat Bluffton University 84-77. The win gives Heidelberg their first 5-0 start since 2005-06.

Heidelberg was led by Megan Miller, Kathleen Phillips and Carli Patrick, who each scored 15 points. Playing in her second game of the season, Miller added six rebounds.

Heidelberg (5-0) held a five-point lead at halftime in the game, which was remarkably close throughout. Throughout regulation, neither team held more than a six-point advantage.

Trailing by five with less than four minutes remaining in the second half, Heidelberg used an 8-0 to take the lead. The rally was keyed by five points from Phillips, who played the final 20 minutes of the game with four fouls.

After a layup from Patrick gave the Student Princes a 70-67 lead with less than 20 seconds to play, Bluffton's Brooke Ruffer hit a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime.

Patrick scored six straight points in the extra session as The Berg outscored the Beavers 14-7 in overtime.

Off the bench, Kyra Dorney grabbed 10 rebounds for the road-weary Student Princes.

"We stuck together down the stretch and relied on our defense to get the win," said first-year head coach Morgan Shriver. "We had some key minutes from players off the bench. We were able to stay aggressive despite some foul trouble. "

Shriver's crew will battle Capital at home on Wednesday. The contest, slated for a 7:30 p.m. start, marks the OAC opener and home debut for the undefeated Student Princes.
