Capital hands women's basketball first loss

TIFFIN – In their home opener, the Heidelberg University women's basketball team lost their first contest of the season on Wednesday, falling to Capital University, 75-59. After a tight first half, the Crusaders pulled away with an up-tempo pace in the second half.

Carli Patrick led the Student Princes with 15 points and six rebounds. Allie Hawkins scored 13 points.

Capital (3-2) was led by Jamie Caton who had game highs with 20 points and eight rebounds.

Heidelberg (5-1) trailed by three at halftime, but Capital snared the momentum with a 12-4 run over a span of two minutes in the second half.

Freshman Gina Miccinilli recorded three steals in 11 minutes of action.

"I think we might've been a little nervous to play at home," said first-year head coach Morgan Shriver. "We couldn't seem to find our rhythm on offense."

Heidelberg shot 39.7% from the floor, well below their season average.

"We have 19 more games to go," said Shriver. "I am confident that our girls will pick their heads up and get back it."

Shriver's team will get back on the court Saturday at Mount Union. Tip-off in Alliance is slated for 3 p.m.
