Women's Basketball Holds Off Late Surge, Beats Marietta 85-79

MARIETTA, Ohio - Four Student Princes hit double-figures as the Heidelberg University women's basketball team holds off the Marietta Pioneers, 85-79.

Senior Kathleen Phillips led the Berg ladies with 21-points, five rebounds and two assists. Phillips' 21 against the Pioneers marks her 16th 20-point performance of the year.

Sophomore Jackie Albrecht finished with 11-points in the win while Paige Ricketts and Molly Schriber's ten-points. Albrecht tallied three rebounds while Ricketts finished with four rebounds and four assists.

Freshman forward Carli Patrick finished with a game-high 12 rebounds to accompany her eight points.

"We were able to get back to playing great team basketball," said first year head coach Morgan Shriver. "Everyone worked together to get the job done on the defensive end."

The Student Princes exchanged the lead with the Pioneers in the early minutes of the game until they began to slowly extend their lead. The Berg women took a ten-point advantage, 19-9, at the 8:11 mark.

The Student Princes took their largest lead of the half, 18 points, with 1:14 left in the first half. The Pioneers went on a 3-1 run to end the half and bring the halftime score to 43-26 in the Berg's favor.

The Berg women maintained a double-digit lead on the Pioneers for a majority of the second half, until Marietta began chipping away at their deficit. With 2:09 left in the game, the Pioneers concluded a 13-6 run that brought the score to 73-69 in the Berg's favor.

The Student Princes fought off another Marietta run that brought the point differential to four points with 0:12 left on the clock. A pair of Schriber free throws secured the Berg's lead in the closing seconds.

As a unit, the Student Princes knocked down 23 of their 26 free throws to finish with an 88.5 free throw percentage.

"This was a very important game in our march to the OAC tournament," said Shriver. "We stuck together, we were able to knock down free throws down the stretch and our loud bench enabled us to stay focused and energized verse their large crowd."

The Heidelberg women will return to the court on Wednesday, February 12. The Student Princes will host the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern for Parents Night.

Tipoff from Seiberling Gymnasium is slated for 7:30 p.m.
