WBK falls, splits opening weekend

RICHMOND, Indiana – Playing its second game in as many days, the Heidelberg University women's basketball team lost to Indiana University East, 96-79, at Earlham College on Sunday.

Theresa Jackson led Heideberg (1-1) with a 20-point effort in the loss. Senior Paige Ricketts was a rebound shy of a double-double as she finished with 15 points and nine boards.

In the first half, a series of 3-pointers by IU East (4-2) gave the Red Wolves into a comfortable lead. With the score knotted at nine, IU East's Kristen Miller connected on two layup and a 3-pointer for a quick seven-point swing. A triple by Bailey Dreiman at the horn gave IU East a 14-point lead at intermission, 52-38.

Heidelberg opened the second half with a mini 4-0 run. Miller, the tournament's MVP, answered with a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer, thwarting any momentum the Tricolor had gathered. The Red Wolves coasted to victory.

After netting 24 points in the opener, transfer Marisa Liburdi tallied 18 points in the loss. Liburdi and Ricketts were named to the All-Tournament team.

Jackie Abrecht had 10 points for Heidelberg, who shot 43.5% from the floor, but 23.5% from beyond the arc.

The Student Princes return to action in nine days. They will welcome Bluffton University to Seiberling Gymnasium for the home opener at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25.
