Cold-shooting plagues Berg at ONU

ADA, Ohio – The Heidelberg University women's basketball team had a rough Wednesday evening, falling 60-31 on the road at Ohio Northern, who now sits alone atop the Ohio Athletic Conference standings. The host Polar Bears went on a huge 29-0 run in the first half, distancing themselves from the Berg before they were able to fight back.

Despite the big run from ONU, the Student Princes were able to gather themselves and made it a 31-19 game entering halftime. Four consecutive points to open the second period made the deficit just eight, but that would be all the closer Heidelberg would come. Ohio Northern (17-5, 13-2 OAC) stayed hot from the field while the Berg had an off-high shooting, and ONU went on to pull away for the 60-31 win.

Heidelberg shot just 16.9% from the field in the game, including 25% from behind the 3-point line. To add onto that, Heidelberg was outrebounded 54-34 in the game, giving them very few second-chance opportunities.

Theresa Jackson led the Student Princes with seven points while Jackie Abrecht chipped in six on 2-of-7 shooting from behind the arc.

Heidelberg fell to 9-13 on the year, including a 7-8 mark in conference play, as they now sit in 6th place in the standings. They currently sit three games ahead of Marietta, Muskingum, and Mount Union, who are all tied with a 4-11 conference mark. The top eight teams qualify for the conference tournament, with the top four seeds receiving byes.

Heidelberg will return home on Saturday, February 14th, when they take on Mount Union at 3:00 p.m. in Seiberling Gymnasium. When these two teams met earlier this year on January 3rd, the Berg came away with a 75-65 road win over the Purple Raiders.
