TIFFIN—The Heidelberg University women's basketball team won their second straight contest with a 63-48 win over Muskingum University. Eight different players scored for the Student Princes. Senior Marisa Liburdi continued her strong season, scoring a team-high 14 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Carli Patrick added eight points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Theresa Jackson chipped in with 11 points of her own.
Heidelberg improved to 4-2 (2-0 OAC) while Muskingum fell to 1-4 (0-2 OAC).
The Berg trailed 11-8 after the first quarter, but a 19-point second quarter gave them the lead 27-22 at the half. A pair of made free throws by Liburdi gave the Student Princes the lead early in the second quarter, and they held the lead for the rest of the half.
Patrick and Jackson each scored six points in the third quarter. The two teams continued to battle, but the Berg never trailed in the period. The Muskies went on a 6-0 run in the final two minutes of the quarter to tie the game at 43-43 heading into the final quarter.
An early 3-pointer by Muskingum pushed them ahead 46-43. A jumper by Liburdi brought the Berg to within one. Shelby Dearth, continuing her deadly 3-point shooting, hit a three with just under seven minutes to play. Dearth's three gave the Berg a 48-46 lead and they never looked back.
The Berg finished the final minute of play going 7-8 from the charity stripe. The free throws pushed Heidelberg's lead with each possession, before ending with the victory.
"We won with our defense today," said Patrick, a junior captain.
Head coach Morgan Shriver on the defensive effort: "I think it was a testament to our team that even though we weren't shooting well we were able to hold them to 48 points...our defense is something we've really worked on this year."
The Student Princes are back in action Wednesday night as they host Mount Union. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
