Mount Union tops Women's Basketball 73-59

TIFFIN – The Heidelberg University women's basketball team dropped its first conference game of the season, falling to the University of Mount Union, 73-59. The Student Princes struggled at both ends of the floor in the fourth quarter, as they were outscored 22-10 over the final 10 minutes.

The loss set Heidelberg back to 4-3, 2-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Mount Union improved to 5-2, 2-1 OAC.

Reigning OAC Player of the Week Marisa Liburdi had a season-high 19 points in the loss.

The Student Princes were out-rebounded 32-27, marking the first time this season they did not hold the edge on the boards.

Mount Union led 17-14 after one and 33-26 at halftime. Both teams struggled with outside shooting in the half, as MTU was 4-for-14 and the Berg was 2-for-11.

A 3-pointer by Maggie Davault and a layup by Theresa Jackson around the 4:00-mark of the third quarter brought the Student Princes back to a 40-40 tie. Heidelberg trailed 51-49 after three.

Back-to-back 3-pointers gave the Purple Raiders a 57-51 lead early in the fourth quarter. Compouding problems, the Student Princes committed three turnovers in the first three minutes of the period. Three free throws from Rachel Tinkey and another Berg turnover forced Head Coach Morgan Shriver into a timeout with her team down 64-53 on the wrong end of a 13-4 run.

Heidelberg was unable to stop the bleeding, as the Purple Raiders then pulled away to a 68-53 lead and did not give that up as the game ended in a final of 73-59 in favor of the visitors.

"This showed us that we need to trust in our game plan. They got us out of it in the fourth quarter and it showed," said third-year head coach Morgan Shriver. "We need to keep playing through our posts because they have been the most consistent for us this year."

Heidelberg welcomes Marietta College(7-1, 1-1) to Seiberling Gymnasium on Saturday. The 1 p.m. game is the front half of another doubleheader.
