TIFFIN – A fourth-quarter comeback attempt by the Heidelberg University women's basketball team came up just short on Saturday against Trine. Trailing by 10 entering the fourth, the Berg was able to pull within one point, but down the stretch the Thunder was able to hold on, handing HU a 77-70 defeat.
Senior Allie Hawkins, who had been held scoreless in three of her past four games, broke out of an early season slump with 12 points in the loss. Hawkins shot 50% from the field in the game, including 3-for-6 shooting from behind the 3-point arc.
The Student Princes fell victim to sloppy play, giving up 22 turnovers in the game compared to just 12 for Trine. The Thunder scored 30 points off of HU turnovers in the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Trine scored the first basket of the game, Heidelberg was able to take a 5-2 lead after a 3-pointer by Shelby Dearth with 4:57 to play in the opening quarter. The Thunder were able to control the remainder of the period, however, as the Student Princes trailed 14-9 after the first.
HU rallied early in the second quarter and was able to tie up the game at 16 after a layup by Marisa Liburdi with 8:14 to play. Once again, Trine was able to rally and built a lead that was as big as 11 as Heidelberg fell behind 40-31 entering halftime.
The Student Princes had a tough time cutting into the Trine lead in the third quarter, but a late run pulled HU within 7 with under a minute to play in the period. As they had throughout the rest of the game, Trine responded with a 3-pointer with 25 seconds to stretch their lead back out to 10 headed to the fourth quarter.
Heidelberg opened the final quarter on a 6-0 run to pull within four with 7:13 to play. The Student Princes continued to pull closer when a 3-pointer by Jackie Abrecht made it a 61-60 game with 6:10 left.
After Trine was able to build their lead back out to seven, the Student Princes answered again and pulled within four (71-67) at the 1:14 mark after a layup by Theresa Jackson. Heidelberg inched closer again with 23 seconds to go when Nicole Payne drilled a 3-pointer to make it a 73-70 score. It turned out to be too little, too late for the Berg, as Trine was able to knock down their free throws down the stretch to hold on for the 77-70 win.
Head coach Morgan Shriver on the turnovers: "We have to be able to handle the pressure a little bit more and make good decisions. I think a lot of it was a lack of focus from the beginning of the game and we weren't taking what the defense was giving us – we were trying to create things that weren't there."
Heidelberg will be off until after Christmas when they travel to Greencastle, Indiana, for the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Tournament, hosted by DePauw. The Student Princes will open play in that tournament on December 28th against Franklin at 2:00 p.m.
