GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The Heidelberg University women's basketball team fell at DePauw in the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Classic on Tuesday. The Student Princes rallied to tie the game at halftime, but the Tigers pulled away in the second half to hand the Berg a 66-51 loss in their final game of the calendar year.
Heidelberg fell to 5-7 with the defeat while DePauw improved 8-3.
Carli Patrick recorded her 19th career double-double in the loss. The junior scored 11 points while pulling down 12 rebounds. Patrick was named to the All-Tournament team after her pair of double-doubles in the tournament.
Heidelberg committed 15 turnovers while the host Tigers committed just 5.
DePauw was able to capitalize on Heidelberg mistakes numerous times, as they scored 17 points off of Berg turnovers, compared to just three for HU off of DePauw turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After an ugly start that saw DePauw get off to an 11-2 lead, Jackie Abrecht stopped the run with a 3-pointer with 5:40 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Tigers were able to build their lead out to as many as 10 in the quarter, but the Student Princes battled back to trail just 19-14 at the end of the period.
DePauw clawed their way back out to an eight-point lead early in the second quarter before the Berg made a run. Heidelberg scored eight consecutive points, capped off by a 3-pointer by Nicole Payne to tie the game at 27 with 2:59 left until halftime.
The two teams traded baskets to close out the half, as a buzzer-beating layup by Marisa Liburdi made it a 34-34 game at the half.
In the third quarter, DePauw was able to slowly build a lead as the Berg just did not have enough of an answer. Heading to the fourth quarter, Heidelberg trailed 51-41.
The Student Princes were unable to put together a run in the final quarter, as the Tigers pulled away for the 66-51 victory.
Heidelberg will return to action on Saturday, January 9th, when they travel to Westerville to face Otterbein. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
