WESTERVILLE – A strong fourth quarter lifted the Heidelberg University women's basketball team to a road victory on Saturday over Otterbein. After trailing by one after three quarters, the Student Princes roared out to a strong start in the fourth and rode that momentum to an 82-70 win, snapping their four-game skid.
After the two teams were locked into a close game for three quarters, Heidelberg outscored Otterbein 30-17 in the fourth quarter, including a 9-0 run to open the period, to pull away for the road victory.
Four different players for the Berg scored in double-figures, including a team-high 18 for senior Allie Hawkins.
Heidelberg shot 55.8% for the game while Otterbein shot just 34.4%, with much of that disparity coming in the fourth quarter.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game opened up with a lot of back-and-forth action, as they ended the opening period tied at 18. Heidelberg led by as many as four in the quarter while the hosts led by as many as three, but they were locked in a tie headed to the second quarter.
Opening up the second quarter, Otterbein jumped out to a four-point lead with 8:14 to play until halftime, but the Student Princes responded. The Berg flipped the script and took their own four point edge with just 2:04 left after Shelby Dearth drilled a 3-pointer.
That lead did not hold up entering the break, as an Otterbein layup with four seconds left before halftime made it 32-32 at the break.
The Cardinals came out of the locker room with a burst and gained a six-point lead after a pair of free throws with 7:44 to play in the third quarter. The Student Princes fought right back and took the lead with eight straight points, capped off by a layup by Theresa Jackson with 6:11 left to give the Berg a two-point lead.
Otterbein was able to finish off the quarter with a slim one-point lead, however, as a pair of free throws with under a minute left in the quarter gave them a slight edge entering the fourth quarter.
Heidelberg finally found their groove to open the fourth quarter, as they went on a 9-0 run to force an Otterbein timeout with 5:34 left in the game.
After Otterbein responded to cut the Berg lead to just four, Carli Patrick made a 3-pointer to stretch the lead back out to seven with 2:28 to play.
The Student Princes were able to hold onto that lead to the end as they went on to win 82-70.
Head coach Morgan Shriver on her team's play in the final quarter:" We made good decisions in the fourth quarter. We talked about our shot selection and valuing every possession at halftime. We executed our offense in the fourth and several players stepped up and hit big shots."
Heidelberg returns home on Wednesday, January 13th, for another conference contest with Baldwin Wallace. That game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. in Seiberling Gymnasium.
