UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The Heidelberg University women's basketball team fell victim to a rough third quarter on Wednesday as they fell at John Carroll by a final score of 65-52. The Student Princes were tied up at 26 with the Blue Streaks at halftime, but a 22-11 third quarter in favor of JCU gave them a commanding lead the Berg was unable to overcome.
In the third quarter when JCU made their run, they shot 75% from the field, including 80% from behind the 3-point arc while the Student Princes managed just 23.8% shooting from the field and 14.3% from 3-point range in the period.
Heidelberg dominated the 2nd chance points colum, scoring 20 while John Carroll managed just seven.
Shiloh Murphy led the Berg with 13 points, including a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the 3-point line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After the game went back and forth to start, Heidelberg was able to pull ahead for a 15-10 lead with 1:59 to play in the opening quarter after a jumper by Allie Hawkins. John Carroll ended the quarter with four-straight points, however, as HU held on to a slim lead headed to the second quarter.
The game remained close in the second quarter, as neither team led by more than a pair until JCU pulled ahead by four after a pair of free throws with 1:08 remaining until halftime. HU had an answer, however, as a 3-pointer by Mariah Pearson with under 30 seconds to play tied the game at 26 at the break.
The third quarter was where the Blue Streaks made their mark, as they slowly but surely pulled ahead, building an 11-point lead at the end of the period.
That trend continued in the fourth quarter, as JCU led by as many as 24 before holding on in the end for the 65-52 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Pearson finished with 12 points for HU, setting a new career high.
Heidelberg returns home on Saturday, January 30th, to face Wilmington. That game is scheduled to tip off at 3:00 p.m. in Seiberling Gymnasium.
