TIFFIN -- Costly turnovers and cold shooting down the stretch plagued the Heidelberg University women's basketball team as they fell to Marietta College, 65-61, on Saturday afternoon. The Student Princes did not make a field goal in the final five minutes of the game.

Marietta improves to 9-6, 3-5 OAC. HU slips to 6-9, 3-5 in conference action.

Trailing by one, a three-point play by Marisa Liburdi pulled the Student Princes ahead 16-14 with just over a minute remaining in the opening quarter. Marietta tacked on a layup in the waning seconds of the period, tying the score at 16 at the end of the quarter.

The Pioneers opened the second quarter on a 9-2 run. A layup from Jackson ended the run and cut the HU deficit to 25-20.

Marietta's Jordanna Rauch hit a 3-pointer to give the visitors a six point lead. HU pulled to within three at the half, trailing 34-31.

Theresa Jackson's and-one to start the second half knotted the game at 34. A pair of Maggie Davault free throws gave the Student Princes a two-point lead. Marietta answered right back with another Rauch triple, giving the Pioneers a 37-36 lead.

Midway through the third quarter, the Marietta defense drew back to back offensive fouls, taking a 45-38 advantage. A Brooke Borich triple and a three-point play by Alexis Enochs helped the Pioneers during the run.

With 50 seconds to play in the third quarter, HU pulled ahead thanks to a jumper from Davault. The Tricolor added to the lead with a Carli Patrick layup, taking a 53-50 lead into the fourth quarter.

Marisa Liburdi gave HU a 55-50 lead at the start of the fourth quarter with a jumper from the elbow.

Borich hit a baseline jump shot with six minutes remaining to give Marietta a 58-57 lead. The Pioneers tacked onto their lead with a pair of free throws by Rauch.

Jackson drained a pair of free throws with one minute to play, pulling the Berg to within two points at 63-61. The Heidelberg defense forced a stopped, but could not grab the rebound, allowing Marietta to continue the possession.

Once again, the Tricolor defense forced another stop, hauling in the defensive rebound with 16 seconds to play. Following a timeout, the MC defense forced a turnover by drawing an offensive foul. Borich sealed the game for the Pioneers hitting both free throws in the final seconds.

Jackson led all scorers with 18 points. Liburdi added 17 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Mariah Pearson chipped in with 10 points in the losing effort.

Rauch led the Pioneer offense with 14 points. Borich and Amisha Herd scored 12 points each.

Marietta scored 20 points off 17 Heidelberg turnovers. HU committed five of those 17 turnovers in the fourth quarter.

The Student Princes went 1-13 from three in the loss.

"We were able to gain momentum and score with our transition offense in the third quarter," said head coach Morgan Harrigan. "We got away from that in the fourth quarter and were settling for outside jump shots."

The win was the Pioneers' first in Tiffin since the 2010-11 season.

Heidelberg wraps up the first half of the OAC slate as they travel to No. 14 Ohio Northern (15-0, 8-0 OAC) on Wednesday. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
