BEREA, Ohio -- A late 3-pointer by Baldwin Wallace broke the hearts of the Heidelberg University women's basketball team as they fell in overtime, 68-67. Theresa Jackson led all scorers, setting a new career-high with 30 points -- including a perfect 10-10 from the line.
Jackson went to the line with 14 seconds remaining in the extra frame. The senior drained both free throws, giving Heidelberg a 67-65 lead.
With five seconds remaining in overtime, Baldwin Wallace's Mackenzie Colombo drained a three from the corner for the lead.
Davault got off a desperation attempt, but the shot hit the back of the iron and bounced out.
With the loss, HU drops to 6-12, 3-8 OAC. BW improves to 15-3, 8-3 in conference play.
Hot 3-point shooting from BW's Sydney Clark in the first quarter gave the Yellow Jackets a 16-6 lead. HU would go on to score six straight, courtesy of layups from Davault, Patrick, and Jackson to cut the deficit to four points.
A triple by Clark -- her fourth of the quarter -- in the final seconds of the period gave the home team a 19-12 lead after one.
Freshman Maddi Stiles nailed a three from the corner to bring the Student Princes within two points at 19-17 early in the second quarter.
The two teams traded points throughout the second quarter, before a small HU run would give them a one-point deficit at the half. Layups from Jackson and Mariah Pearson, along with a pair of Jackson free throws cut the BW lead to 31-30 at halftime.
Similar to the second quarter, the third quarter featured tradeoffs of points between the teams. A layup from Marisa Liburdi and free throws from Jackson and Davault gave Heidelberg a 46-40 lead late in the period.
Hannah Fecht hit a three from the corner to cut the HU lead to 46-43 heading into the fourth quarter.
With 7:10 remaining, Davault drained a triple to give the Student Princes a six-point lead. Patrick added with a layup, giving HU its biggest lead at 57-49.
The Yellow Jackets would come back, going on a 9-0 run to take a 58-57 lead with just over two minutes remaining. A three from Fecht and a layup by Colombo capped off the BW run.
A Jackson three-point play gave HU a 60-58 lead with just over two minutes to play. Colombo responded at the other end with a layup to tie the game at 60.
Baldwin Wallace missed two layup attempts in the waning seconds, sending the game into overtime, where Colombo's heroic triple gave BW the win.
The Student Princes dominated the game on the glass, out-rebounding the Yellow Jackets, 52-36.
Both teams struggled from beyond the arc. HU shot just 15% (2 of 13) while BW shot 26% (8 of 31).
Heidelberg will travel to Otterbein (8-10, 4-7) on Saturday. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
