Women's basketball falls to No. 5 ONU

TIFFIN -- A slow start hurt the Heidelberg University women's basketball team as they fell to No. 5 Ohio Northern, 81-57, on Wednesday evening. Five Student Princes finished in double-figures in the losing effort.

Seniors Maggie Davault, Theresa Jackson, and Carli Patrick all scored 12 points for HU. Freshman Brittanie Ulmer recorded a career-high 11 points while Marisa Liburdi added 10 points.

The Polar Bears opened the game with a commanding first quarter. A three by Alexis Kirkbride as the shot clock expired gave the visitors the momentum and a 19-6 lead late in the first quarter. ONU led by 17 at the end of the period.

Ohio Northern kept the momentum in their favor in the second quarter -- where they pushed their lead to as many as 21 points. ONU led at the half, 43-22.

Heidelberg opened the second half on a 9-2 run, cutting the deficit to 14 points. The run forced Ohio Northern to call timeout. The Polar Bears regrouped following the timeout, and pushed their lead back to 21 by the end of the quarter.

ONU had 22 assists on 32 field goals, shooting 57% from the floor. The Polar Bears dominated the game on the glass, out-rebounding the Berg 38-24. Amy Bullimore paced the Polar Bears with 22 points, leading all scorers.

Heidelberg struggled from three -- shooting 24% compared to ONU's 47%.

With the loss, Heidelberg slips to 8-14, 5-10 in the OAC. The Polar Bears keep their perfect record as they improve to 22-0, 15-0 in the conference.

"The slow start really hurt us tonight," said head coach Morgan Harrigan. "We need to do a better job of coming out ready to play."

Harrigan looking ahead to Saturday: "We need to rally around our eight seniors and get this win for them."

The Student Princes will host Mount Union (11-11, 6-9) on Saturday for Senior Day. Prior to the game, HU will honor the eight seniors on the roster. Tip off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
