Sophomores stand out in win

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Kentucky -- The Heidelberg University women's basketball team had four sophomores in double figures, including a double-double by Madelyn Crawford, en route to a 69-53 victory over Saint Mary's College on Sunday. The Berg went 1-1 on the weekend, having lost to No. 5 Thomas More on Saturday.

Heidelberg improved to 2-3 on the year. The Belles dropped to 1-4.

Crawford's double-double -- 12 points and 15 rebounds -- is her second of the season.  She was named to all-tournament team.

Brittanie Ulmer led Heidelberg with 16 points. Guards Aianna Wilson and Maddie Stiles each had 10 points in the victory. Stiles added seven assists in 27 minutes off the bench.

Down 21-19 with three minutes left in the second quarter, Brooke Beamer ignited a 7-0 Berg run highlighted by four Ulmer free throws. The stretch gave HU a 26-21 lead at the break.

The Tricolor started the third quarter on a 10-2 run that opened their lead to 13 at 36-23. From that point, the Belles would never get closer than 10 points.

"We picked up our pressure and pushed the tempo the entire game and it paid off for us," said Head Coach Morgan Harrigan. "We came out after the half like the team we see in practice everyday, so it was great to see things come together before we start conference play next week."

Heidelberg held the Belles to 1-of-17 shooting from beyond the arc.

The game was the first meeting between the two schools since the 1983-84 season. The Student Princes won that game, too -- 70-56.

Heidelberg will visit Baldwin Wallace University (3-1) to open up Ohio Athletic Conference action on Wednesday. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.
