WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- A second half surge was enough for Otterbein University to edge the Heidelberg University women's basketball team, 95-85. The Cardinals sank free throws down the stretch to distance themselves from the visiting Student Princes.
Heidelberg drops to 3-4, 1-1 in the OAC. Otterbein improves to 4-3, 1-1 in conference action. The loss snaps a streak of three straight wins over the Cardinals.
Neither team could push out in front to a big lead in the first half. The teams took a 43-43 tie into halftime.
Bolstered by free throws by Dani Kissel and a 3-pointer from Jacy Jones, the Cardinals had their biggest lead heading into the final period at 70-63.
A three-point play by sophomore Leah Bouillon cut the deficit to one with 3:38 remaining. Otterbein's Ali Cartnal hit a three that took a friendly bounce off the rim to push the lead back to four points.
The home team built their lead back up to nine, before an Ulmer triple cut the deficit to six points with 1:14 left. It would be the closest the Berg would come for the remainder of the contest, as Otterbein was perfect from the foul line in the last two minutes.
Otterbein proved to be efficient on offense, committing just seven turnovers the entire game. Kiersten Taylor led the Cardinal offense with 21 points, while Cartnal added 20.
The Berg will have a week off before they head home to Tiffin for their home opener on Dec. 9. Tipoff against Wilmington College is scheduled for 3 p.m.
