TIFFIN -- A fourth quarter lapse cost the Heidelberg University women's basketball team in a 69-53 loss to Capital University. The Crusaders outscored Heidelberg 24-12 in the final quarter to seal the victory.
The Berg falls to 4-10 overall, 2-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
Sophomore Maddy Crawford recorded her fifth double-double of the season, tallying 15 points and 12 rebounds. Alyssa Riley contributed 11 points for the Berg.
Neither squad took control through four sloppy minutes, with the teams combining for nine turnovers in that span. Later, as the two teams finally settled in, Leia Moore hit a jumper for the Berg to tie the game at 13 heading into the second quarter.
Capital started the second quarter on a 6-0 run before Crawford briefly halted the Crusader momentum. Capital used another small run to extend its lead to 10 points. With three minutes before the break, Megan Siesel hit a three off a feed from classmate Brooke Beamer. The shot cut the HU deficit to seven points.
Junior captain Aianna Wilson completed a three-point play, putting HU down 27-21 with 2:19 before the break. Capital held Heidelberg scoreless for the remainder of the period, taking a 30-21 lead into halftime.
Crawford scored the first seven points for the Student Princes out of the half. The Berg gained momentum throughout the third quarter, forcing Capital turnovers and grabbing defensive rebounds. With four minutes in the third, freshman Mattie Overmyer poured in a layup to bring the Berg to within two at 36-34.
With three minutes in the third, Riley drained a three from the wing, knotting the game at 37. The Crusaders used a timeout to regroup, and finished the period on a 8-4 run to lead 45-41 heading into the final quarter.
Capital poured onto their lead in the fourth quarter, where they built a comfortable lead and held off the Berg for the remainder of the game.
With the win, Capital head coach Dixie Jeffers won her 700th career game.
Despite the victory, Capital did not make a 3-pointer the entire game (0 of 7). Capital also outrebounded the Berg, 46-33.
HU will host Marietta as part of a men's and women's doubleheader for Alumni Day. The women's tip is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
