TIFFIN -- Despite holding a small lead at halftime, the Heidelberg University women's basketball team was outscored 42-18 in the second half, falling to No. 10 Ohio Northern University 67-44. The Polar Bears closed out the third quarter on a 11-0 run to extend their lead and never let it dwindle.
Freshman Mattie Overmyer was the only Student Prince in double figures with 11 points -- including 3 of 4 from beyond the arc.
HU jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first quarter, helped by a step-back triple from Brittanie Ulmer. ONU cut the deficit to single digits, but Heidelberg still held a 18-13 edge after one. The visitors chipped away at the Berg lead, where the home team led 26-25 after the first half.
Ohio Northern forced turnovers and Heidelberg into cold shooting, outscoring the Berg 23-10 in the third quarter. ONU used the rest of the second half to pull away and remain undefeated in conference play.
The Student Princes committed 20 turnovers compared to ONU's 12. Ohio Northern held a significant edge in rebounding, 49-34.
ONU's Amy Bullimore led all scorers with 16 points. With a free throw in the third quarter, Bullimore became Ohio Northern's all-time scoring leader.
HU falls to 4-12, 2-7 in the OAC. The Polar Bears remain a sharp 15-1, 9-0 in conference play.
Heidelberg begins the second half of the OAC slate on Saturday at Wilmington College. Tip off against the Quakers is scheduled for 3 p.m.
