TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University women's basketball team put in one of their best performances of the season against No. 24 Baldwin Wallace University inside an electric Seiberling Gymnasium. The Student Princes stayed neck and neck with the Yellow Jackets before being outmatched late in the fourth quarter and falling, 74-64.
The contest marked the first conference game for both sides.
The Berg came out of the gates quickly, building a seven point lead just 2:39 into the first quarter. An Alyssa Riley three pointer gave the Student Princes their largest lead of the first half.
A bench technical foul on Heidelberg (2-3, 0-1 OAC) allowed BW to close the gap to just one point midway through the period. The last five minutes of the quarter featured six lead changes, with BW leading 23-22 at the first break.
Much of the same took place during the second quarter as there were five lead changes and five ties during the period. BW (5-0, 1-0) held the 16-13 edge, taking a 42-35 lead into the half. The Yellow Jackets' 46% shooting in the second quarter outmatched the Berg's 23%.
Maddy Crawford had a huge first half for the Berg, collecting her third double-double of the season in the first 20 minutes with 11 points and 10 rebounds at the break.
Heidelberg controlled much of the third quarter as they quickly erased their seven point halftime deficit on an 11-1 run to open the second half.
BW quickly flipped the script finishing the quarter on a 10-3 run. The Berg did outscore the Yellow Jackets 17-16 in the frame.
Heidelberg's shot went cold during the fourth quarter as the team shot just 23% from the floor in the final frame. Baldwin Wallace opened up the game, extending their lead to as much as 11 before settling for the 74-64 win.
Alyssa Riley hit double figures in scoring for the fourth time this season collecting 12 points. Beamer's 13 points tied her season-high, set vs. MIT. Crawford added onto her first-half double-double, finishing with a team-high 15 points and 12 rebounds. Wilson's 10 points marked the first time this season the senior guard has hit double digits.
Wilson collected a game-high five assists on the evening. Riley and Beamer each tallied two helpers a piece. Brittanie Ulmer collected two steals on the defensive end for the Berg.
The Student Princes hit the road to continue OAC play at Wilmington College for an afternoon tip-off on Saturday at 3 p.m.
