BEXLEY -- The Heidelberg University women's basketball team made the trip to Bexley in hopes of defeating Capital University for the first time since February 1, 2017. However, the Crusaders had other ideas and defended home court as they took home the 62-49 win.
For the Student Princes (8-8, 4-5), Brooke Beamer led all scorers with 15 points. Capital (10-6, 5-4) was led by twin 14-point evenings by Erin Risner and Elle Folan.
Capital led from the opening tip off and never looked back as the Student Princes were forced to play catch up across the four quarters.
Heidelberg was undone by a poor third quarter. Trailing by 12 at the halftime break, the Berg exchanged early buckets to trim the deficit. Unfortunately, the brief respite was just that. Capital closed the final 4:46 of the quarter on a 12-0 run.
After nipping away at the Crusaders in the fourth to attempt a comeback, the Student Princes finished with a flourish, ending the game on a 10-2 clip. However, the efforts proved to be too-little, too-late as Capital took home the 13-point victory.
Across the game, the often dominant Maddy Crawford was held to just two points and six rebounds during her 25 minutes of action.
Heidelberg held the advantage on opportunities from the free throw line as they knocked down 15-of-21 attempts. Capital only found 50% success at the line.
The Berg did convert Capital's 24 turnovers into 21 points to make a run at the Crusaders, but it proved to be not enough in the end.
The Student Princes return home this weekend as they host the Otterbein Cardinals. Heidelberg will look to set the record straight after being knocked off 82-61 in Westerville earlier this season. Tip off is currently slated for 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. The impending snow forecast might have other ideas. Announcements as they come available can be found on BergAthletics.com.
