TIFFIN -- For the first time in its history, the Heidelberg University women's lacrosse team has won a conference game -- defeating Muskingum University, 18-8. Freshman Angela Lulejian scored a program-record eight goals as the Student Princes improved to 5-3, 1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
The Muskies (2-7, 0-2) tied the contest at 2-2 with 22:02 left in the first period. Then the Student Princes rattled off six straight goals -- three by Lulejian and one each by Dudley, Anna Winnicki and Jen Kovarik.
With Heidelberg up 8-2, the Muskies reeled off three straight before the Student Princes closed the half on a four-goal run. Lulejian scored three of the four, tallying seven goals and an assist before halftime.
Down 12-5 at half, Muskingum opened the second half on a 3-1 run. With 11:45 left, Dudley scored her fourth of the game just before the shot clock expired, giving Heidelberg a 14-8 lead. A short time later, Abby Rose tallied her first goal of the game off a feed from Winnicki.
Heidelberg went up 16-8 on Dudley's fifth of the season before Lulejian nabbed her eighth of the game. With 1:20, Kovarik's second gave HU a 10-goal cushion.
Freshman goalie Jessica Ballow had another spectacular start in goal, making six saves, several on free position attempts. Heidelberg caused 10 turnovers in the win, four coming from Winnicki.
"I'm proud of our girls to get our first OAC win," said co-coach Ashley Travis. "We had a lot of players step up and work together as a team."
The Berg will have a quick turnaround, as the Student Princes travel to Oberlin College tomorrow for a 1 p.m. contest.
