TIFFIN, Ohio - The Heidelberg wrestling team battled back from their close loss last Thursday to beat the College of Mount St. Joseph Lions, 40-3.
The Berg only surrendered one loss at 184-pounds to roll to a decisive victory. The Student Princes took an early 12-0 lead as the Lions forfeited 125 and 133-pounds. The Berg swept 141-pounds through 174-pounds before dropping their first matchup. 197-pounds and 285-pounds would go the Berg's way to close out the contest.
Sophomore Justin Kihn arguably had the match of the night at 141-pounds as he took on Wayne Black, who is ranked by d3wrestle.com. Kihn and Black would take a 1-1 tie into the overtime period after three thrilling periods of regulation.
In a scramble with short time left, Kihn tossed Black to his back in the first sudden victory period to claim a 6-1 decision.
Sophomore Damon Cheek wrestled to a major decision at 149-pounds by shutting out his opponent, 13-0. With the Berg leading 19-0, sophomore Aaron Banko earned another victory for the Berg with a 6-3 decision before senior Jeremy Stepp scored a dominating 0:15 fall.
Senior Jason Russell nearly claimed a technical fall, but instead scored a fall in a time of 6:19 with a spladle. Sophomore heavyweight Nino Majoy finished out the night for the Student Princes with an entertaining 2-1 victory in the first tiebreaker period.
The Student Princes will travel to Olivet, Mich. on Saturday, November 23 to compete in the Olivet Duals. The Berg wrestlers will take on four teams in dual match action starting with Indiana Tech at 10:00 a.m. The Student Princes will then battle Wisconson-Whitewater, Trine and finally, Alma to close out competiton for the week.
