ALLIANCE – The Heidelberg University wrestling team competed at the Mount Union Duals on Saturday against four non-conference opponents. The Student Princes finished the day with a 1-3 record with all three of their losses coming to nationally-ranked opponents (#3 Messiah, #16 York, #23 Lycoming)
Heidelberg's lone win of the day came in their first dual against Thiel. The Student Princes got off to a good start after winning the first three bouts. Derek Thomas won at 125 by decision before Ryan Hornack earned bonus points with a tech. fall at 133. Justin Kihn stretched the Berg's lead to 11-0 with a 7-2 decision at 141.
After Thiel took the lead after a pin at 165, the Berg responded with a pin at 174 when Myles Wright finished off his opponent in an even three minutes, putting Heidelberg back on top 17-12.
Thiel won the 184-pound bout to close the gap, but a pin by Rickey Bruce at 194 in just 46 seconds sealed the dual win as Heidelberg went on to win 23-21 over the Tomcats.
With their dual record currently standing at 1-4 on the season, Heidelberg will have Thanksgiving weekend off of action before returning to the mats on Saturday, December 5th, when they travel to Ada for the Ohio Northern Invitational.
