FORT WAYNE, Indiana – The Heidelberg University wrestling team regrouped after struggling early – then bowed out of the NWCA National Duals on a criteria tiebreaker. Heidelberg lost to Wisconsin Whitewater, beat Augustana (Ill.) and tied Cornell. The tie was broken because Cornell won more bouts in the match.
WHITEWATER 23 vs. HEIDELBERG 9
In the third period, tied at 2, Price started on the bottom and got a reversal five seconds in, only to have UWW's Zac Denny return the favor 10 seconds later. Price's escape point proved the difference in the 5-4 victory.
Hornack attacked Austin Quartullo to the tune of three takedowns in a 10-6 victory, which gave Heidelebrg a 6-0 edge.
Whitewater took control of the dual by winning the next six matches -- five decisions and one technical fall.
Down 20-6, Gage Finegan stopped the Warhawks run with a 3-0 win over Bowen Wileman.
Whitewater closed the match with another decision.
HEIDELBERG 31 vs. AUGUSTANA (Ill.) 9
In their first consolation bracket match, Heidelberg fell behind early, 3-0.
Hornack improved to 2-0 on the day with an 8-4 win over Brendan Gould. Hornack led 6-1 after the first period, thanks to two takedowns and backpoints,
At 141, Justin Kihn pinned Sean McMahon in 1:12 – giving Heidelberg a 9-3 lead.
Damon Cheek needed overtime to pick up a win at 149, but took down Collin Tomkins in quick fashion. Cheek's win gave Heidelberg a 12-3 lead.
Following an Augustana win at 157, Aaron Banko helped get Heidelberg back on the winning track. Banko began the second period down, scored on a reversal and a takedown.
Myles Wright continued the momentum with a first-period pin of Alex Bowers. Wright's fall came 57 seconds into the match.
Dillen Decker followed Wright's stick with one of his own. Decker pinned Nick Torres in 24 seconds, giving Heidelberg a 27-6 edge.
After giving up points at 197, Heidelberg closed the match with a decisive 11-2 major decision by John Eckroth.
HEIDELBERG 20 vs. CORNELL (Iowa) 21
Cornell won the first three matches against the Student Princes, including a 2-1 overtime match at 133.
Down 9-0, Cheek put the Student Princes on the board with an 8-1 decision at 149. Up 2-0 in the third period, the HU senior when on the offensive and outscored Anthony Curtis 6-1.
Following a pair of major decisions that went Cornell's way, Wright took home six points with an injury default.
Decker dominated Jarod Cadena at 184, taking five points with a technical fall, 16-1.
Trailing 17-14, Rickey Bruce pinned Benjamin Bergen in 1:43, giving Heidelberg their first lead, 20-17.
At 285, Eckroth and Eric Tucker were locked in a tight contest. In tiebreaker 2, Tucker defeated Eckroth, 4-3.
With the match knotted at 20, Cornell advanced on criteria – having won more bouts in the dual.
Heidelberg begins the OAC slate at Ohio Northern on January19th. That match is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start.
