AUSTINTOWN – Heidelberg University senior Justin Kihn was selected as the 2015-16 John Summa OAC Wrestler of the Year, as announced on Friday by the conference. He becomes just the third Heidelberg wrestler to earn the honors, as current head coach Tony Patrizi earned it in 2004 while Joe Pflug was awarded in 2007. Joining Kihn as a first-team All-OAC selection was freshman Dillen Decker at the 184 pound weight class.
Kihn finished the OAC dual schedule a perfect 5-0, including one tech fall and one major decision. He has had a strong senior campaign thus far, sporting a 20-7 overall record with four pins. Kihn ranked 9th in NCAA Division III in the most recent D3wrestle.com rankings in the 141 pound weight class. This is the second All-OAC selection of his career, as he was a second team All-Conference honoree last year. Kihn also earned OAC Wrestler of the Week honors back on February 15th after he defeated Jeremy Border of Mount Union by a 5-3 decision on Senior Night in Seiberling Gymnasium.
"I'm very proud of Justin because of how he earned this award – through tireless dedication to his craft," said Patrizi, in his second year at the helm. "He made some positive changes in his wrestling which had a significant impact on his success. Justin is very deserving of this honor."
Dillen Decker also earned a spotless 5-0 record during OAC duals at 184 for the Student Princes. In those five wins, the freshman picked up one pin and one major decision. His season record currently stands at 18-7 with four pins on the season.
The Heidelberg wrestling team will travel to Lycoming College this weekend for the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional. The two-day event is scheduled to get underway on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., with the top three placers in each weight class advancing to the NCAA III Championships.
