TIFFIN -- On Senior Night, the Heidelberg University wrestling team emerged with a hard-fought win over the University of Mount Union, 27-16. Seniors Ryan Hornack, Gage Finegan and Nino Majoy all picked up wins in their final match under the Seiberling Gymnasium spotlight, as the Student Princes also honored classmates Derek Thomas and Tyler Majoy. Dallas O'Green and Darren Decker highlighted the contest with pins.
The Student Princes took the last four matches of the evening en route to the conference win.
Heidelberg improves to 9-3 in duals overall and remains a perfect 3-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference duals. Mount Union falls to 7-10 overall, 2-2 in the OAC.
"We had some guys step up tonight," said third-year head coach Tony Patrizi. "Dallas really got the momentum going for us with his pin."
Mount Union's Nick Mancini picked up a win over Mason Brainard at 125. Mancini used a first period takedown and four nearfall points to take a comfortable 6-0 lead after one. In the second, Mancini started on the bottom and pinned Brainard after a reversal.
With his team trailing 6-0, senior Ryan Hornack earned a first period takedown of Nate Kirk. Starting down in the second, Hornack gave up two nearfall points in the second. Down 3-2 in the third, Hornack dropped Kirk with 50 seconds left, taking a 4-3 lead. Hornack was able to ride out the clock, winning 4-3.
In his first career OAC match, HU's Hunter Pizzino had a tough draw -- facing No. 5 Alec Cotton. Cotton pinned Pizzino in 2:17.
Having watched his team give up two early pins, freshman O'Green answered back with a stick of his own. O'Green pinned Kyle Ferguson in 2:28 -- improving his record to 24-2 on the season.
At 157, Noah Messerall kept the frenzied Seiberling Gymnasium crowd engaged with three takedowns in the first period. In the second, he tacked on another takedown. In the third, he used an escape and a riding time point to win, 10-6. Messerall's three points tied the team score at 12 at the intermission.
After an entertaining intermission, MTU's Jesse Gross went on the attack early against Steve Murray. Murray staved off a near fall, but trailed 9-3 after one and 12-4 after two. Murray wasn't able to get in rhythm as Gross came away with a 17-6 major decision.
At 174, Darren Decker picked up his 12th pin of the season -- sticking Nick Miller in 2:06. The fall gave Heidelberg its first lead of the match, 18-16.
Dillen Decker took a 2-0 lead over Isaiah Watson-Kirksey into the second. Up 4-2 in the third and starting down, Decker thwarted Watson-Kirksey by picking up two escapes en route to a 7-4 victory. Dillen's 25th win of the season gave Heidelberg a 21-16 lead in the match.
At 197, Finegan scored the lone takedown of the first period. MTU's Grant Martin started down to start the second and quickly escaped. A stalling point gave Finegan a 3-1 edge in the third, which was returned later, A riding time point gave Finegan the win, 4-2, and sealed the match in favor of the Student Princes.
Majoy rode a first-period takedown into the third before grabbing an escape and a takedown in the final period. Down 5-1 in the waning seconds, MTU's Mike Sinclair needlessly engaged Majoy, who avoided the takedown and scored two points of his own as the horn sounded. With a riding time point, Majoy won, 8-1, giving HU a 27-16 victory.
"Mount Union wrestled us really tough tonight," said Patrizi. "Our guys had some gritty wins and I'm proud of the way they competed."
Heidelberg continues a busy week with a B-Team match at Lourdes University on Wednesday. The varsity team returns to OAC action on Friday night at John Carroll University. Both matches are slated for 7:30 p.m. starts.
