WRS: Berg unable to tame No. 6 BW

TIFFIN -- A hard-fought match by the Heidelberg University wrestling team, paired with an exuberant crowd was not enough, as HU fell to No. 6 Baldwin Wallace University, 35-8. The Yellow Jackets closed out the match with three consecutive pins to seal the victory for the visitors.

Heidelberg slips to 7-8, 3-2 in OAC action. The Yellow Jackets improve to 18-2 and remain a perfect 5-0 in conference matches.

Mason Brainard got the match off to an exciting start with a quick takedown out of the gate. With four nearfall points and two more takedowns, Brainard held a large 16-5 lead after the first period. BW's Chris Doyle, ranked No. 6 on D3Wrestle.com, added a takedown and an escape to cut Brainard's lead to seven points. Less than a minute into the third, Brainard completed the upset, picking up a 23-8 tech fall win.

After a first period lull, Baldwin Wallace's Dante Ginnetti picked up two points in a takedown as the first period ended over Tre Bogetich. In the 133 bout, Ginnetti added to his lead with four nearfall points in the second. Ginnetti, a contender on D3wrestle.com, won by major decision, 10-0.

Trailing 3-0, Slade Todd took down Aaron Kelly to cut the deficit to 3-2. After a Kelly escape, Todd scored two takedown points with ten seconds remaining in the second period to even the match at 4. Kelly padded his lead with two more takedowns in the final period to win the 141 bout, 9-6.

At 149, Stanley Bleich controlled the match against Heidelberg's Hayden Bates. Bleich won by major decision over the 'Berg sophomore, 10-2.

Senior captain Noah Messerall held a 4-0 lead after one period with two takedowns to spark life back into the Seiberling Gymnasium crowd. Despite surrendering two escape points in the second, the 157-pounder scored another takedown in the second. Messerall held on for the critical win halfway through the match, 7-4.

Logan Broskie held tough against BW's Anthony Arroyo, ranked No. 4 on D3Wrestle.com. Arroyo proved to be too much for Broskie, as the All-American took the 165 match, 7-1.

In a tight 174 match, Baldwin Wallace's Justin Random narrowly edged out Jeremiah Slagle, 4-1. Ransom is a contender on D3Wrestle.com

Zeckary Lehman made quick work of Tyler Hammack in the 184 match, pinning Hammack in 2:31.

After holding a commanding 7-0 lead, BW's Tyler MacIellan pinned Chase Morrison in 3:32. With the pin a 197, the Yellow Jackets used the back-to-back pins to seal the win.

Baldwin Wallace closed out the match with its third straight pin. Gabe Mahaney handed Christian Climer his first conference loss of the season at 285, pinning him in 5:54.

"I'm really proud of the way our guys fought tonight against a tough opponent," said head coach Tony Patrizi. "I also want to thank the crowd for coming out tonight and bringing such an energy to the match."

Heidelberg will host Ohio Northern on Feb. 13 for its final home match of the season. Match time under the spotlight is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
