AUSTINTOWN -- After finishing the season as OAC runner-ups in 2017-18, the Heidelberg University wrestling team hopes for improved success in 2018-19. Under the leadership of fifth year head coach Tony Patrizi, the Berg hopes to contend for a prosperous postseason this year.
The Student Princes will be led by 2017-18 National Qualifier, Tyler Hammack at the 184 weight class. Hammack was 27-13 last year and was 3-2 in OAC competition. He placed third at the NCAA Regionals to book a spot in Cleveland. After being bounced after just two bouts, the senior will look for further success this year.
Mason Brainard, a returning regional placer at 125, will hope to punch his ticket to the national Championships this year in the 133 weight class after posting a 27-10 record last season. Tre Bogetich comes back at 133 who finished 14-15 in 2017-18.
Slade Todd compiled a 15-17 line last season at 141 and will hope to see an expanded role this year. Also at 141, Berg returns Hayden Bates who finished 2017-18 with a 14-10 record. Bates who wrestled at 149 in 2017-18 will hope to improve upon his 4th place finish at the Regional Tournament a year ago.
At 174, Jeremiah Slagle hopes to improve upon his 17-18 mark a year ago. Also returning at 197 is Chase Morrison finished 19-16 last year with a 2-2 OAC record.
Head coach Tony Patrizi is looking forward to what his team can do this season: "Heidelberg Wrestling is extremely excited for the upcoming season. We return nine starters from last year's lineup. Their experience and leadership will certainly play an important role in developing a very talented group of incoming freshmen."
THE SCHEDULE: The Berg wrestlers will face a 16 competition schedule, including four OAC matches, one OAC Quad Dual match, and 11 invitationals. The Student Princes get things started at the Adrian Open hosted by Adrian College on November 3. The Tricolor begins OAC competition on November 13 at Wilmington, before hosting Ohio Northern inside Seiberling Gymnasium on November 27 for their home opener. Heidelberg also will host their own invitational at Kalahari on December 15. Finally, their last home match will be February 5 vs. John Carroll. HU finishes their season March 8 at the National Championships in Roanoke, Virginia.
IN THE POLLS: Heidelberg was selected to finish fourth in the OAC this season with 31 points. Baldwin Wallace was selected first, with 49 points with seven first place votes. Mount Union was chosen second with 42 points and one first place vote, while Ohio Northern placed third to round out the top half of the table.
ROSTER BREAKDOWN: Patrizi will begin the 2018-19 campaign with 27 men on the roster. By class -- 13 freshmen, four sophomores, seven juniors, and three seniors. By hometown -- Ohio (13), Michigan (6), Illinois (2), Oregon (2), Florida (1), Georgia (1), Indiana (1), Tennessee (1).
