Neal's Late Equalizer Boosts Women's Soccer to Tie

TIFFIN, Ohio – As dusk settled at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex, a strike off the left foot of junior Christina Neal propelled Heidelberg University women's soccer to a 1-1 tie with Defiance on Tuesday.

Goalkeeper Molly Schriber allowed one goal, a penalty kick, on seven shots. She finished with four saves.

The Defiance goal, scored by Bibiana Parra, came in the 66th minute on a hot, humid evening.

Neal's equalizer, an 87th minute goal, was set up from a throw-in on the right side. She cut back in between Yellow Jacket defenders and put a shot on net that tipped off Defiance goalkeeper Clara Zamora. Neal contributed three shots and classmate Rachel Gilbert had one.

Defiance (1-3-1) had more scoring opportunities in the overtime periods, but Schriber and the 'Berg defense held firm.

"Despite the heat, our girls battled for 110 minutes," said eighth-year head coach Nick Spell. "Neal's goal was a great reward for our hard work."

The tie snapped a three-game losing skid to start the season for Heidelberg.

The women's soccer team will return to Hidden Valley for a 2 p.m. match against Bethany on Saturday.
