Women's soccer falls in opener

DEFIANCE – The Heidelberg University women's soccer team could not have asked for a better start to the first game of their season. Off a feed from Alexandra Sivec, Christina Neal scored a goal 90 seconds into the contest, and Heidelberg took an early lead over Waynesburg College.

Unfortunately for the Student Princes, Waynesburg would score two unanswered goals and handed Heidelberg a 2-1 defeat.

Neal's goal was one of three shots on goal for the Student Princes. Heidelberg had 11 shots in all.

Sophomore Kenzie Lundqvist saved five of the seven shots she faced in her first collegiate start.

Waynesburg tied the game with a goal in the 18th minute. The Yellow Jackets netted the game-winner in the 70th minute.

"It was a tough loss knowing we came out strong and took the lead early," said head coach Nick Spell.  "We had our opportunities but we didn't finish them.  We are now looking at tomorrow against Defiance and we want to turn opportunities into goals."

Heidelberg returns to action on Sunday against Defiance. The match is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
