TIFFIN— On a sunny afternoon at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex, the Heidelberg University women's soccer team honored their seniors for Senior Day. The Student Princes ended the contest with a 1-1 tie against Marietta.
Only out-shooting the Pioneers five to four in the first half, Berg scored first in the 24th minute. Seniors Emily Hopton and Christina Neal teamed up to give the Student Princes their only goal on the day. Neal passed from inside the penalty area to a waiting Hopton at the back post, who drilled the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of the season. Neal led the team with five total shots for the game.
Outshooting Heidelberg 10 to five in the second period, Marietta (1-13-3, 1-4-2 OAC) found the net in the 60th minute of play. A pair of freshman partnered up for the goal as a pass from Kristen Jones found Ali Kowal for her first goal of the season. Sydney Willis was the Pioneers lead shooter with six shots.
The two teams battled back and forth in a pair of overtime periods, with both Heidelberg and the Pioneers getting three shots, but neither team was able to break through as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Heidelberg moved to 3-12-2 on the season with the tie, including a 0-5-1 mark in OAC play. The Student Princes take on the Capital Crusaders on Wednesday, Oct. 29 on the road for their next match. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Columbus.
