TIFFIN – The Heidelberg University women's soccer team was able to get off a number of shots in their match against Mount Union on Saturday, but it was not enough as they fell 3-1. The Student Princes pulled within one goal in the second half, but the Purple Raiders scored a late goal to pull away and clinch the victory.
Alexandra Farmer made a season-high 13 saves in the match. She faced 29 shots in the contest.
Mount Union outshot Heidelberg 29-18 in the game, as both sides were able to find a number of chances.
Mount Union got on the board early, when a counter turned into a breakaway for the Purple Raiders. Kelsey Malenic got behind the Heidelberg defense and was able to chip the ball over Farmer for the early 1-0 lead in just the 3rd minute.
Despite a number of chances in the rest of the half, Heidelberg entered the break down 1-0. Mount Union held the edge in shots 14-11 at halftime.
The Purple Raiders took control right out of the gate in the second half. They were able to extend their lead to two when Nicole Lanese was able to get loose in the box and roll the ball into the back of the net in the 68th minute.
The Student Princes would not go down without a fight, however, as they answered in the 73rd minute. Kristen Keenan assisted Danielle Rathfon for her 5th goal of the season, bringing the deficit to just one.
Heidelberg was unable to find the equalizer though, as Mount Union pulled away with a late goal in the 81st minute to take home the 3-1 win.
Heidelberg will travel to Ada on Wednesday for another OAC match with Ohio Northern. That contest is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
