Callahan, Farmer lead WSC to upset

TIFFIN -- A first half goal was all it took for the Heidelberg University women's soccer team to pick up their first conference win of the season over visiting Otterbein University 1-0. The Berg improves to 6-7-2, 1-4 as Otterbein falls to 8-4-1, 3-2. The win ended a 13-game losing streak against the Cardinals.

HU scored their lone goal on Abby Callahan's third goal of the season. Amanda Kilway played a beautiful through ball to Callahan. On the initial shot by Callahan, the Otterbein keeper made the save. The rebound deflected back towards the goal and Callahan one-touched it into the net.

Otterbein had a chance to tie the game with 20 minutes left when Annie Mosca headed a ball off a cross. HU goalkeeper Alexandra Farmer made a great diving save to her left to preserve the shutout.

With five minutes left in the match, the Cardinals had another opportunity for the equalizer, but Farmer once again made a great diving grab.

Farmer made 10 saves in the clean sheet -- her third of the season. Otterbein's Andrea Pohlman recorded two saves.

The Cardinals outshot Heidelberg 18-5 -- 12 of Otterbein's shots came in the second half.

The match was Heidelberg's breast cancer awareness game.

Head coach Nick Spell on the match: "Our girls came out ready to play today ... We executed our game plan and we did a great job defensively of shutting down a good attacking team."

Spell on Callahan's goal: "It's exciting that she was able to finish the opportunity that she had."

Spell on the play of Farmer: "She takes some of the pressure off our team ... We can relax a little and allow some shots from further out because we know she's going to make the save."

The Berg travels to Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday for an OAC match against the Yellow Jackets. Kickoff in Berea is scheduled for 7 p.m.
