WSC remains undefeated with 4-0 win

DEFIANCE, Ohio -- Less than 24 hours after their season opener, the Heidelberg University women's soccer team cruised to a 4-0 win over Bethany College Saturday afternoon. The Student Princes move to 2-0 on the season, their first 2-0 start since 2000.

The two teams battled back and forth for much of the first half. It appeared they would go into the break scoreless before an own goal put Heidelberg on the board with two minutes before the half.

In the 60th minute, Erica Campbell doubled the Student Prince lead with her first goal of the season. Danielle Rathfon connected with Campbell in the box for the strike.

It didn't take long for Rathfon to find the back of the net herself. The junior extended the Tricolor lead in the 62nd minute with her 10th career goal off a feed from fellow junior Amanda Kilway.

With a commanding 3-0 lead, the Berg tacked on one more thanks to sophomore Hannah Witt. Witt, who missed the 2016 season due to injury, scored an unassisted goal in the 83rd minute.

The Berg defense, led by Darby Moloney, Kate Mundy, and Maddy Hines kept the Bethany offense at bay, allowing just one shot and zero corner kicks throughout the match.

Goalkeeper Alexandra Farmer made just one save in the game. The junior picked up the 11th clean sheet of her career.

The Student Prince offense outshot the Bison 25-1. Bethany goalkeeper Maria Concha Vazquez tallied 14 saves in the losing effort.

Heidelberg Head Coach Nick Spell: "We did a great job of making adjustments to the other team and executing our game plan … It was a good weekend, but it's time to start looking to Wednesday … We want to open up at home well against a good Hiram side."

Heidelberg will return to its home field for a 4 p.m. matchup Wednesday with Hiram College
