Late rally comes up short for women's soccer

TIFFIN -- A hard-fought battle did not go in favor of the Heidelberg University women's soccer team. The team dropped a tight match to Baldwin Wallace, 3-2, on Wednesday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets struck twice in the first half, with Anna Poptic and Rachel Bender scoring goals.

Less than five minutes into the first half, Erica Campbell got the Student Princes on the board. The sophomore netted her team-leading 11th goal of the season from the right side into the far post. The shot was set up by a beautiful through ball by fellow sophomore Maddy Hines.

In the 73rd minute, Poptic found the goal again, streaking through the Heidelberg defense for a breakaway. The goal put the visitors up 3-1.

Danielle Rathfon capitalized on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute. It was the junior's fifth goal of the season.

HU pressured the Baldwin Wallace defense for the remainder of the match, but could not find the equalizer.

Goalkeeper Alexandra Farmer made five saves in the loss. The Berg now stands at 8-7-1, 2-4 in the OAC.

Heidelberg is back in action Saturday for a 1 p.m. match with Marietta College for Senior Day. At halftime, the Berg will honor seniors Melodie Harnett, Madelaine Kuhn, Darby Moloney, Abigail Callahan, Maureen Kelly, Kimberly Keenan, and Madison Myers.
