LEXINGTON, Ohio - By capturing four singles matches and a crucial doubles match from the Wittenberg University Tigers, the Heidelberg University women's tennis team claimed their first victory of the 2013-14 season, 5-4.
The Berg ladies were scheduled to square off with the Tigers back in October but were forced to postpone the match due to inclement weather. Inside the Lakewood Racquet Club in Lexington, Ohio, it was the efforts of Sofey Fugate, Deidre Potter, Sara Potts and Nicole Millar that put the Student Pirnces ahead 4-2 after singles action.
Fugate, who occupied the Heidelberg one spot, dropped her Wittenberg counterpart, 6-4; 6-3. following her victory, the sophomore teamed up with number two, junior Katie Strahan, in doubles action.
The duo conceded a defeat, 8-6 in the first doubles contest after Strahan fell, 6-3; 6-2 in singles competition.
As the Heidelberg number three, Potter seized a 6-3; 6-4 victory followed by a commanding 6-4; 6-0 victory from Millar in the four match. After their success in singles action, the senior-freshman duo collected the deciding victory in the second doubles match, 8-6.
Potts, Heidelberg's junior number five, earned a 6-2; 6-4 win over her Wittenberg counterpart before senior Melissa Lovati dropped the last singles match of the day, 6-2; 6-1.
Potts teamed up with senior Rachel Brushaber in the third doubles match of the afternoon. The junior-senior duo went down, 8-6.
The Heidelberg women will join the Berg men as both squads, along with veteran head coach Jerry McDonald take travel to Hilton Head, S.C. for their annual southern jaunt.
Action from Hilton Head, S.C. is slated to begin on Monday, March 10, when the Berg ladies take a swing at the Fighting Scots of Gordon (Mass.) College. The Student Princes will battle five teams in five days before returning for Ohio Athletic Conference action.
