Women's Tennis opens Fall with 9-0 win at Defiance

DEFIANCE – The Heidelberg University women's tennis team opened up their fall season with a resounding victory over Defiance College on Monday. The Student Princes swept the Yellow Jackets 9-0. It was the first season-opening win for the Berg women since a 9-0 win over Bluffton in the 2012-13 season.

Sofey Fugate led Heidelberg with a dominant performance at first singles, defeating Savannah Marquez 6-1, 6-0. Fugate is coming off of second team All-OAC honors a year ago and has been named All-Conference in each of her three years as a Student Prince.

Markilynn Hogle (3rd singles), Siara Patrick (5th singles), and Allison Costatino (6th singles) all won in straight sets as well. Nicole Millar (2nd singles) and Allie Gales (4th singles) had the most closely-contested matches of the afternoon, winning in a tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets.

In doubles action, Fugate and Millar teamed up at first doubles for an 8-2 win while Hogle and Gales won convincingly, 8-1, at second doubles. Patrick and Catherine Harris had the closest doubles match, winning 8-5.

Heidelberg will be on the road again for their next match when they travel to Michigan to take on Adrian College at 3:30 p.m. on October 5th.
